Los Angeles Granite - Tips To Avoid Mistakes While Buying Granite Countertops

Granite is definitely a great choice for kitchen countertops because of its strength and durability. However, if you do not choose the right granite countertop, you could end up taking a major loss on your investment. You need to check certain important factors when you buy granite countertops in Los Angeles and ensure that you make a good purchase.

Avoid waxed surfaces

Ideally, granite surfaces need to be polished. When the polish is done efficiently, the sheen on the stone is uniform. Irregularities such as scratches and stains should not be visible on a perfectly polished stone. Also, a well done polish lasts for years.

However, not all granite suppliers take the trouble to polish granite slabs because the process takes up time and resources. Instead, they do a basic polish and apply wax on the surface to make it look glossy. Over time, the wax wears off and your surface begins to look dull. In order to avoid purchasing such granites, you should scratch the edge the stone with a coin. If it has been waxed, the wax sticks to the metal.

Avoid glued or stuck countertops

Countertops that have been repaired or glued are not strong. The glued joints are the weak links on the slab. With time, more cracks and damages occur along the glued joints. So, it is very important to ensure that the countertop you buy is in one piece.

One of the first checks is to run a hand over the slab and feel for glued areas. Usually, you can feel a fracture on the surface. Another check is to look at the slab sideways rather than from the top. From a side angle, you can notice factures that have been glued together before the stone is polished. While small fractures in granite are common and do not need to be glued, you must avoid stones with large fractures that are glued to keep the slab in one piece.

Avoid slabs with inconsistent thickness

When you check the slab, you need to pay special attention to varying thicknesses. You need to avoid buying slabs that do not have uniform thickness. If you do end up buying such a slab, a lot of care needs to be taken when it is laid on the counter. You need to provide proper padding under the areas that have less thickness so that the countertop is strong and durable.

Hire a reputed and reliable granite supplier in Los Angeles so that you can be assured about the quality of the countertop.
